1% For the Planet
TRI-FIT is giving back 1% of all sales, not profits, to environmental causes.
Here TRI-FIT owner Dan Evans talks about why he joined, and what impact he hopes to have.
What is 1% for the Planet?
"1% for the Planet is a global organization that exists to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. They act as an accountability partner for businesses supporting environmental partners through annual membership. They make environmental giving easy and effective through partnership advising, impact storytelling and third-party certification.
Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet members have given over $450 million to environmental partners. Today, 1% for the Planet’s global network consists of thousands of businesses and environmental partners working toward a better future."
Why did you decide to join 1% for the Planet?
“We joined 1% for the Planet because we felt it was important to give something back. As triathletes we are very connected with the environment as its essential to training and racing, and we wanted to help protect it. But it wasn't just that. I have 2 young daughters and I feel that we all have a responsibility to try and leave the planet in a better condition for future generations”
Why 1% for the Planet?
"It just seemed like such a good idea and a simple and effective way to give back! Corporate responsibility was something I was conscious of when starting TRI-FIT as I had worked for companies that didn't care, and it never sat well with me. Once I heard about 1% for the Planet and what they did, that was it, I was sold!"
What area will you be looking to donate to?
"The sea has always played a huge part in my life. I grew up next to the sea in Weymouth and all my family worked in roles that were connected to the sea. I have also traveled the world extensively and it always pains me to see dirty beaches, rivers, lakes etc. Therefore organisation based around clean water will always get TRI-FIT's support."
How much have you donated so far?
"To be honest, I would prefer to keep this in house. We don't do this for the pat on the back or for the PR, but it is a significant amount. In fact I was reluctant to shout about it at all! But then I realised that the word needs to be spread in order for the movement to get traction and generate as much money as possible. TRI-FIT are members to do good in the world not because we want to show off."
What impact do you hope to have?
"This is pretty simple, I hope that the donations from TRI-FIT make a difference in our chosen organisations and the lives of people around the world. I also hope to set a good example for my children and spread the word to our amazing customers."
What do you believe is the key message?
"Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment and, only 5% of that comes from businesses. The planet needs bigger support than this, and 1% for the Planet's growing network of business members are doing vital work to increase giving and support on-the-ground action."
